Missions

HOMEBOUND MINISTRY:

Working with community partners since the mid 1990s, Ms. Mary Alice Wolfe has been providing food deliveries to homebound area households year-round.  Currently, she and Glenn Barnett head our Homebound Ministry team, serving over 40 households on a weekly basis, regardless of race, creed or religious preference.

This is an extremely important and necessary mission of our church and crucial to our community.  Deliveries are on Tuesday mornings.  Help is always welcome on preparing boxes and delivery.  Please contact the church if you are interested in this ongoing opportunity for service in our community.  We also accept canned food donations and frozen food donations by appointment.

HELPING HANDS:

When you donate to this fund, you are providing emergency funds for everything from groceries to a car tire, a prescription cost or wheelchair ramp, sponsoring a local youth sports program, or food for our summer Family Vacation Bible Week.  All funds are used for local community outreach and support for local individuals and families in urgent need.

CHILDREN CHURCH, SUNDAY SCHOOL and VBS

Currently, we offer Sunday School, Children Church for 2 and up on Sundays, as well as VBS during the summer for five days.  Of course, these programs are open to whoever shows up!  If you have been attending our church for six months and pass the requisite background check, we are always looking for more volunteer help to broaden our Children Ministry offerings.  Come join us and bring those chitlins!

We are currently restoring Sunday School rooms for a growing number!  Our “Fill the Chairs” campaign is currently ongoing for fundraising for our Children Ministry programs.  Please see Donations page to see how you can help!

COMMUNITY EVENT BOOTHS AND TENTS

OH, YES, if something is happening in Hastings, our Methodist church is going to participate as much as possible!  Whether it be the Art Festival, Hastings Main Street or Rotary pop-ups or the Cabbage, Festival and Bacon Festival, our church always tries to have a presence.  Sometimes we cook, sometimes we run booths, sometimes we offer our church for an event, sometimes we open our doors and run church tours, running the entrance for the Youth Football.  Being a presence and a blessing to our community is part of our duties, and we always need all hands on deck!  Please sign up or offer up ideas on how you can support our community!

GIRL SCOUTS

Our local Girl Scout Troop makes CUMC their home…and we surely are lucky to have them.  Led by Lisa  King, they are an active and important part of our Hastings community. Our Troop 62 is a multi Troop. We have girls from kindergarten through fifth grade.  The girls love our community and serve in many ways from Main Street clean-up, food drives for Homebound Ministry, Christmas stocking program, happy birthday bags for food pantry, cards for seniors home, collecting hurricane supplies and so much more!

Our Troop 53037 is made up of girls in sixth through twelfth grade.  They are working on their Gold award and also help with Troop 62.

If you have a child interested in joining, please contact us for their information.  Meeting nights are reflected on our website calendar.

HASTINGS PANTHERS AND CHEERLEADING YOUTH LEAGUE

Our church has always been a financial/hands-on sponsor with our local Youth League.  This has been a very important youth opportunity in our community, and an opportunity for outreach in helping with home games on every level. We have sponsored players, provided Childrens Bibles for all participants.   If you are interested in gatekeeping, chain holding, field painting or even coaching, please contact Everett Williams to join in the mission of keeping our children healthy and busy.

HASTINGS BOULEVARD CAR SHOW

This popular annual event has been coordinated by CUMC and sponsored by local businesses since 2017.  In 2016, we received a vision that by finding a way to fill what, at that time, was an empty Downtown District, with people and cars – a bustling picture of what Hastings was and could be again – we could bring hope back to our community and put the spotlight on what a great place this would be to start a new business.  In February 2017, we shut down N. Main Street and sent out flyers for car show fanatics, cooked up cauldrons of clam chowder and fried piles of fish – and the rest is history!  We have grown from a 50-car show to limiting out at just over 100.

DID IT WORK?  Our original backdrop was the shell of the original Civic Center Building, some empty lots, boarded up buildings and Gator Hardware.  Our backdrop in the coming years will be a beautiful new Library Building, with several new businesses in renovated original buildings – and Gator Hardware.   This event relies on our local business sponsors, local associations and churches, local volunteers, and car clubs and fanatics, local and surrounding counties.  It is fun for the whole family, whether you love cars or just enjoy socializing, good music, and great food.  All roads lead to Hastings and “The Boulevard” – at least, that’s what God said, and He made it happen!
